Night Outreach

At least once a week, Rahab volunteers go out to do street-based Night Outreach in West Reading. We distribute contraception, food, drink and offer support by starting up ordinary conversations. Through the contacts made during Outreach, and from Referrals from partner agencies, we offer day-time support.

Our aim is to meet people where they’re at. The Golden Rule is to be pleasant, respectful and compassionate. Often our first contact with someone is through meeting on the street, and we have to be aware that this is during work. Conversations can range from 2 minutes to almost 2 hours: we are there to serve and not to impose.

Night Outreach Teams always consist of a Team Leader (always female) and at least one other volunteer. Some volunteers are men, and we value that they also want to serve in this way. No contact is initiated by our male volunteers, all conversations and decisions are led by the Team Leader. All Night Outreach volunteers are interviewed, CRB checked and trained.
